KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team will head into its regular-season opener next Friday against Ferris State ranked No. 20 in the nation by USCHO.com.

The website released its preseason poll on Monday with the Broncos tied with Northeastern to round out the top 20. WMU is one of five schools from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference to earn a spot among the nation's best.

WMU closed out last season in the No. 10 spot in the poll after making its sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos spent 20 weeks of the 2016-17 season in the national rankings, including 10 in the top 10.

Western Michigan hosts Wilfrid Laurier for its annual "Border Battle" exhibition game on Saturday at 1 p.m. The night before WMU hockey fans can come meet the team at Lawson Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
